Canada Visitor Visa Misuse: Stronger Measures Needed to Prevent Abuse

Canada needs to do a ’stronger job’ of curbing misuse of visitor’s visas, Miller says

Immigration minister Marc Miller says Canada needs to prevent the abuse of visitor visas. The government’s investigation into visa applications from India and scrutiny of closer visa applications from India has also been decided by Canada. Said Miller: “Much has been done to take care of visitors. However, we must make sure strict controls are enforced on visas issued so that the actual purpose for which it’s being issued does not get misused but to make asylum claims or enter the U.S.”.

Between October 2023 and August 2024, US Customs and Border Protection encountered 21,929 migrants at the Canada-U.S. border, with nearly 60% hailing from India. This is a significant increase over previous years, so there could be more scrutiny over the visa applicants in the future coming from India.
